My dear friend Holly, turned me on to The Story of Stuff. Please go watch the video in its entirety. Please. For most folks, the information isn't new. But, to see the big picture put together so concisely is mind boggling. Smoochy actually watched it first and brought it to my attention as a 'must see' and something he could really "get behind." As for me this is the gentle nudge I need to to better. Sure I recycle... some times and cloth diaper when it is convenient. But the truth is I could do a lot more.* I'll be continuing to post about the changes that are going to start happening around here. But for now, just go to The Story of Stuff, and be reminded for yourself why changes are doable and satisfying.
*I know by reading this some of you (...ahem... Charile) are going to think, oh no, not more hippy-crap. But, please check this out. If even for the chance to make fun of me offer a rebuttal. I'd really appreciate it!

I've been a recycling freak for a while now...even going so far as to pull cans and bottles from the garage trash can to put in the bin.
I actually started a compost in my back yard about 6 months ago for all of my organic waste ie. veggie waste, eggshells, coffee ground, anything from the kitchen that doesn't contain any animal products (besides the egg shells). I was amazed at how much doing this cut down on my trash. We used to take out 2-3 cans of trash a week but have trimmed it down to 1 now. Not only is it better for the enviroment but it makes for an amazing fertilizer for your plants and vegetables. You have to have a mix of not only green (organic waste) products but also of brown (grass clippings, leaves, small twigs, etc.) I am earnestly trying to talk all of my friends into taking this simple project!
First, You need to get more sleep. This posting at 4 o'clook in the morning is crazy. Second, Thank you George Bush and the Republican party. Everytime someone tells you we need to give more tax beaks to the corporations so that they will have more money to provide more jobs, you can remember what you learned from this post.

Dad, didn't you like in The Story of Stuff when she said that of all the many things Bush could of suggested we do after 9/11 like grieve, pray, or spend time with family, that he urged us to SHOP!
And as far as the time goes, some how the blog was set for MOUNTAIN time! Ooops. All better now.
Its always someone else fault... damn republicans. we cant blame ourselves for getting into that habit. Socialists 2008!
Socialists 2008!!! I laughed so hard!
So true.
We're are so F---ed up!
I think it is funny that anyone would blame Bush for consumerism. Everyone wants to point the finger at someone else, but maybe they should point it right back at themselves. By the way, Bush urged people to get back out and shop, because business were starting to fail with no customers, which leads to people losing their jobs, which leads to all sorts of other problems. I suppose the government was supposed to fix everything!! Typical democratic crap!!
I think the LAST thing The Story of Stuff, or anyone else was trying to do was blame Bush for consumerism. OBVIOUSLY it is something that we must take responsibility for.
Overall I thought that it was a good message. I heard a couple years ago of a woman that decided that she would not buy anything that wasn't a 'need' for a whole year. What an accomplishment that would be for most people. I think that would help put into prospective of what is really important in our lives. And I do agree that we sit and watch too much T.V. I also agree that we should not be blaming one person, we the people are all responsible for our own actions and greed.
