Easter

We missed it. OK, I missed it. I don't have any excuse. I just missed it. We skipped church, the eggs, the baskets, all of it. And I feel like crap about it. SO... I'm thinking NEXT Sunday might be Easter for the Smoochy family. At least I'll be able to get some Easter gear half-off... Maybe a trip to Target is in order?

The whole thing has me thinking about how sad holidays feel without family and friends to celebrate with. It might be better if the kids were older and we had some of our own family traditions developed. I realize that as the mother it is MY job to develop those traditions. I'd like to really give some thought to this.

Of course I want to do the egg dying and hiding. But what should the Easter Bunny bring the kids in their baskets? Surely later we'll do some candy... but I don't want to give my one and almost three year-old a basket full of chocolate bunnies and Peeps... though I do love me some Peeps. I don't really want to do toys either.

Arg. I want to write about holidays and traditions. I want to find ways to mark the glorious transition in to Spring and celebrate the Resurrection... and all I'm blabbing about is Easter baskets and half-off Easter crap. Maybe, it's time to just call it a night. I'm pooped. I'll just finish by saying I am meditating a lot about what kind of traditions and celebrations I want to develop with my kids. I am looking for something more real than plastic eggs and stuffed bunnies made in China. I want to develop traditions that really help us feel connected to Spring's victory over Winter and connected to Christ's victory over death.

The kids did color Easter Eggs... sorta.

Sunday we went to the park and had some very lovely family time.

Our Easter baskets had waterproof markers and a notepad, a book, egg shaped sidewalk chalk, and a ring-pop. My kids have no idea who the easter bunny is, which I'm fine with.

My Dad would have the garden tilled up a few days before and have the veggie plants bought. And on Easter, after lunch we'd go out to start planting a garden. He continued this when I had little ones. It was fun for the kids. They'd always have to go see how their plants were doing when they visited.

I was also thinking that something to grow would be nice...a tree, a packet of seeds, a flower to transplant. Or what about a special breakfast food or cake (with something hidden in it maybe). As they get bigger, they could help make it.

Find a church which inspires you to celebrate your values and it will set the tone for Easter. No candy and toys will be needed.

Echoing a few others, we focused on spring and seeds. I found these really cool dolls called Earth Friends. The one I got for Noa has a backpack with seeds inside. I also got her a book called What's This? about a little girl who plants a sunflower and waits for it to grow... From the looks of your photos, though, it seems like you have a very loving and family-centered Easter. Buck the system, think outside the box. You will find what feels right for you!
