What's in a Name?

"That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet."

So true, Juliet. Be that as it may I think it's fair to say that I am torturing myself obsessing over baby names. Specifically boy baby names. I spend hours on this site: Baby Name Wizard. Have you seen it? And every night after the kids are in bed my brain instantly switches over to baby names. Smoochy called it the other evening when I started throwing out suggestions. He said, "Ah... you do this every night!" I haven't been falling asleep easily because I lay there and feel the baby flutter and rack my brain for the perfect name.

I expect a lot out of a name. Giving someone their name is a HUGE responsibility. That first definition of self makes a big impression, I think. We're talking nicknames in grade school, resumes in adulthood, and everything in between. Of course I can't be satisfied with a name that simply appeals to my sense of aesthetic. I want a name that has deep significance, ties the child to it's past, or if we're lucky fits their inner being. I know, a tall order. My son is named after his father; plus, I adore the name Jacob... so that one is a winner. Though, I sure wish it wasn't in the top ten. Like many in my generation, I would prefer a less common name, that still manages to sound familiar. Like Georgia. Georgia has the perfect name in my book. Georgia Elizabeth meets all my criteria. It is the place where her Daddy and I fell in love and had our first house. It is a lovely old name that you don't hear every day, but sounds elegant and sophisticated. Elizabeth is my mother's middle name, further giving her name a sense of past and history. Georgia's name was a real home run.

If this lovely little baby growing in my belly turns out to be a girl we have this name thing all sewn up. Our second daughter's name has been chosen for quite a while now. Lola Elaine. I know most of you hear that name and think "Lo-lo-lo Lola" from the Kinks son, but that one doesn't taint my joy in the name. I think of another song...

"Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl, with yellow ribbons in her hair and her dress cut way down to there..."

OK, so maybe naming my daughter after a showgirl isn't the thing to do. But, that song is magic to me. It is part of the soundtrack of Smoochy's and my courtship. There was this night club where we would go dancing that has multipul rooms. One for top 40, one for country, a jazz room, and a retro room. I would never have gone into the retro room if it wasn't for him... but with him I would dance to anything. In fact he's the only guy I've ever really danced with. I used to think I could dance, but it was my own personal style (chipmunk on acid) complete with non-stop swirling hands and fast moving feet. Not something that lent itself to being partnered. In fact, I wanted space on the dance floor so I could dip and spin and kick all to myself in my own little bubble. I had a long thick braid that I would flip around like a horses tail shooing flies if boys got to close. But, with Smoochy everything changed. Suddenly I wanted a partner. So one night we were dancing in this retro room, and he requested the Copacabana. The DJ played it, and the song cleared the dance floor. Suddenly, everyone needed a drink. But, not us. He swung me out into the big empty space and twirled me and dipped me all the way through the song. I felt beautiful, carefree, and light as a feather.

At our wedding, Smoochy requested it in a moment of spontaneity, immediately after our "first dance". No one joined us of the floor and once agin we found ourselves in the spotlight acting out Lola's tragic love life in a little night club in Cuba. It was the best.

So Lola Elaine: a perfect name. Elaine is Smoochy's mother's middle name, adding once agin to the depth of history. True: Lola is a little trendy these days. But, I've long since gotten over the fact that I am not really original. At least it's not in the top ten like Jacob is!

The problem is, I am almost 99% sure this baby is a boy. I can just feel it. Deep in my gut, from the moment I knew I was pregnant I was sure this was a boy. Of course, I am not the most intuitive person. However, there are physical signs that lead me to suspect this baby's maleness. For one, I have acne pretty bad right now. With Normy's pregnancy, my skin was a wreck. I have never had worse acne in my life. With, Georgia I had beautiful clear skin. Then there are my breasts. With Normy, they went up a cup-size and we very tender. With Georgia, they hardly changed at all. Which do you think is the case this time? Plus, this baby is due in June... right on target to be a Gemini with Normy and Smoochy, who are both June babies. Georgia and I are both February babies. Hmm... see what I mean: BOY!

I don't think I can make it 40 weeks for a definitive answer. Despite my inner hippie, I am planning to find out for sure with an ultrasound. I figure I bought the hospital ticket, I might as well go for the hospital ride right? ;-) I really just want confirmation. A part of me feels like I would be doing this baby a disservice by so adamantly believing it's a boy when all the while she's really my little Lolita. Or maybe that's just my justification for being impatient and invasive. Either way, if the baby cooperates, I'll know pink or blue on the 15th!

Boy's names are really giving me a headache, though. There are so many fewer choices than girl names, and I can't seem to come up with any with both significance and a aesthetic appeal. That, and Smoochy and I can't seem to find any common ground. To every name I suggest he simply says, "ALBERT."

Albert? Really, Albert?

Let's just say, it's not my style.

But, what is my style? I'm not sure. But, I've spent a little time today make a list of names I like, so I'll share.

Lawrence Ripley (The cities where Smoochy and I hail from)
Edward Ripley (My great grandfather and home town)
Sebastian Charles (my great grandfather and Smoochy's father and grandfather)
Gabriel Craig (just like it and my dad)
Stefan William (just like it and my grandfather)
Edwin Dante (just like it and just like it)
Everett Ripley (Just like it and my home town)
Robert Franklin (just like it and just like it)

But, don't get attached to any of these. Smoochy is going to come home and take the red pen to all of them. "Albert."

OK, let the games begin: Do you think is it a boy or a girl? Also, if you'd be so kind, I'd love to hear your original boy-name suggestions! ;-)

I love the name Lola and the significance. If it is a girl, I would frame that lovely photo of the two of you dancing and put it in her room. She will treasure it.

As for boy names, I think going with a meaningful or family name is a great idea. Ripley, especially, stands out to me as unique but not so unique that it would be an "odd" name for him in school. We've always been partial to Will. William Ripley, maybe? :) Enjoy the fun of naming your little one. Congrats!

Everett is mine, woman! Our boy name is Asher Everett, for the record! However, I 100% sympathize with your predicament because I think this baby may be a girl, and we cannot get anywhere near a girl name! Good luck! I'll be waiting for the 15th to find out your news! :) Much love!

Grandpa Sommer. I'm assuming that's why jacob wants the name Albert. The most wonderful gentle soul.

Albert Francis Sommer...whom your dear Smoochie's middle name came... was the most kind, simple, gentle, hard working and loyal man whoever lived. He loved his family deeply and judgment never crossed his lips.
What an incredible shadow for your son to stand in....no man I know of can hold a candle to that man's legacy. Albert is a noble calling.

I have no idea if your baby is a boy or girl...I'm getting no vibe yet :).

If you name your baby Lawrence...do all you can to keep him from getting nicked into Larry! Also, love Edward, but remember that because of the Twilight series, that name has become ultra popular.

When I hear Lola, first I think of Copacabana, then I think of my great-great-aunt Lola, and then I think "Hey, that's almost like my own daughter's name" (Lila). I love Lola, for the record.

We have three girls, so I never got to actually use any of our boy names. I had my heart set on Mason during my first pregnancy. It ended up being a girl, and then Mason became very popular. Then during my second pregnancy, I had my heart set on Reid. It ended up being two girls, and then my childhood best friend ended up naming her son Reid. I really always wanted to name my son Davis, but it ended up being my married last name, so it wasn't meant to be. I love Miller, Anderson, and ALBERT (not Al and not Bert...but Albert). Good luck!

oh, I haven't been around for soooo very long - congrats!

And I don't envy you the naming thing. It's far too tough and suddenly a new name will come out of the blue to throw an entire list of track. But every single one you've listed has got great flow and character - awesome choices :)

(but, if I may, Gabriel Craig is brilliant!)

Helllooo from Ripley! I was thinking if you like Quincy at all? That is what Ripley was called before it changed to Ripley. Quincy Charles?? I think it sounds very strong!

I must say that above explainations concerning the name Albert sound very nice (especially long Jacob's explaination:)) So for me it would be Albert Dante.
I love the name Dante but in Poland this name almost does not exist. I am sure that the one you choose will be the best.

And what about ICAR?

Okay, you know I never thought of a boy name until they were born. You're so right, there are so many more beautiful girl names than boys. BTW, I love Lolita! I really like Edward Sebastion. I've fallen in love with the name Edward recently. You know I've been reading a lot and went back to the classics. Edward is so classic and strong. If I didn't have a zillion cousins and uncles named Edward, our next son would be Edward. Did I just say I'm getting pregos again?! And for Sebastion, I've always loved that name. Of course, Jaime would veto both because they aren't biblical names. Good luck Girl. Estela

Thanks for all your suggestions and encouragement, folks! I really liked some of them.

I had no idea Ripley used to be Quincey!?!?! That is very interesting to know. We can't use it though, because even thought I think it would make a very cool name, one of our friends has a dog named Quincey. Therefore, it is suddenly in the same category as Milo and Otis which are otherwise awesome names.

Nonnie, I'm not too worried about Twilight references. The books and movies are a fad, and though I may have to endure ribbing if I had both an Edward and a Jacob, surely in ten years it will have all been put behind us. I was thinking of Edward long before I read the twilight series, but I totally have to admit that after reading and LOVING the books, the name has just that much more appeal to me. And Stelly, give me a break, you may have been reading the classics lately... but I know the first Edward you think of has copper hair and topaz eyes! ;-) Man, I miss you girl and I will be dying to hear any news from you! ;-)

Holly, Asher Everette is all yours. But, for the record... I LOVE THOSE NAMES! Asher would be on my list if my hubs didn't HATE it. Asher, after all was one of Jacobs 11 sons (Thank you very much, Red Tent)

And certainly, I respect and love to hear all of the stories of Smoochy's heritage. And knowing that ALbert Sommer was such an admirable man, certainly helps the name. I just can't help the fact that I don't like it. Just like, I adore the name Charlotte (Grandma Sommer) but Smoochy thinks of it as a fat girl's name. It has nothing to do with family history, just preference.

Quaterrest, It has been a long time hasn't it! Great to see you! I have to say that Gabriel Craig is at the top of my list this morning too. Jacob of course says, "Albert."

I don't really know how I am going to stand up to this kind of force. My husband can be so damn willful.

So, the name game continues.

Although Grandpa Sommer was a wonderful man, a gentle, loving soul, I don't think that he would want you to feel pressured to name your child after him. I think he would be deeply touched just knowing how many people think so highly of him. Jacob can share all his stories with baby #3 about "Albert" and his legacy will continue. It is hard to see a tiny baby and think "Albert", and there is no disrespect to the man that carried that name. Gabriel is a favorite in my book.

oh, and p.s. to Jacob... does he have something against fat girls????

Ms. Smoochy said...

Boy, that was a jackass thing of me to write. I wish I could take it back. But, it's out there... so

Well, I'm sorry.

And no, Smoochy doesn't have anything against large ladies.

Ugh, I hate Albert! I like Sebastian Charles. Sebastian was on my list! Our second choice name was Philip. We've settled on Alexander Michael. :-)

I like how you thought through all of the significance - wonderful! I liked the stories behind the kids' names. I had assumed that Georgia was after the state, but wasn't totally sure!

Gabriel Albert...there ya go, problem solved. :)

Father said...

for the record I don't remember saying that Charlotte was a "fat girls" name. I think I said that about Emily, and that was only because that was my brother-in-laws vote for his girls name. In any event I do not have anything against fat girls, actually I've had my fair share of fun with some large women.

And me wanting to name my kid Albert really has little to do with my great-grandfather. I wasn't around him a lot before he died and don't really remember much. I just like the name.

I think Gabriel Albert is a great compromise. I personally love the nickname Gabe... it sounds hot! I can't wait though to find out the news on the 15th... 8 days but I'm not counting.
I love the beautiful dancing pic. I have to share that Mikey is sitting with me. When he saw that he freaked out. He seriously thought you were being hurt! Kids are too funny!

This child will be born and won't look like anything you have chosen.
And you will start all over.

Of course I love the name Lola! And we have heard every version of every song that has her name in it. And there are many!!! My favourite is "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets". Again a homerun. If people are constantly inspired to put her name into songs it must be poetic, romantic, memorable... Funny, Becca, what prompted you to comment on my blog a few months ago is the same thing that caught my eye on your blog all this time later and when I announced our Lola's name to my waiting family and friends I titled the email "...a rose by any other name would smell as sweet..." It brings out the romantic in everyone. And it has spawned the most lovely bunch of nicknames over the last 6 months. Lola Bean, Lola Granola, Lolly, Lolo, Lola Yum... and she is delicious. And she's a gemini.

I too was certain that the enormous squirms, kicks and quivers in my belly last year were that of a little man. They were bold movements and I felt brash and sassy. ANd when this little girl squirmed her way out and into our arms I was surprised to find that I already knew her... even though she wasn't who I was expecting.

Names, names, names. So much in a name. I feel your agony and have felt it myself.

By the way our boy name was Sorley.

That is the single most romantic story about the significance of Lola.

A boys name I LOVE....River.

It took everything I had to tell you that. I keep it locked away because if we ever have another boy, it is sooooo River Scott Jones.

Oh I agree that Twilight is a fad and certainly won't come to mind by the time the kids are in school; I just wonder of Edward is going to be one of those names where teachers have to specify last names because they have a room full of Edwards. Maybe this means more to me since I was a teacher and every year showed obvious name trends.

Congrats on your new baby girl! I have three girls myself, and even at this young age I already see the sister bond.
